Player Notes

  • Secures first win Sunday
McFarland (1-0) got the win against the Orioles on Sunday, firing a perfect eighth inning during which he recorded two strikeouts.

Advice: McFarland's dominant eighth frame saw him locate eight of 10 pitches for strikes, a particularly impressive display of efficiency. The veteran southpaw has had a couple of stumbles overall, but McFarland has mostly been a reliable bullpen workhorse for manager Mark Kotsay. Factoring in Sunday's appearance, he's already logged 11.1 innings across 16 appearances, posting a 3.97 ERA and recording four holds in addition to his one victory. Rotowire.com 9 minutes ago
  • Slugs second homer in win
Brown went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a win over the Orioles on Sunday.

Advice: Brown opened the scoring on an eventful afternoon for both teams' bats with a 409-foot shot to center in the second inning. The round tripper snapped a 13-game homerless drought for Brown, who has left the yard just twice over 86 plate appearances after averaging a homer once every 21 trips to the batter's box over the previous three seasons. • Will Klein demoted to Triple-A
Royals optioned reliever Will Klein to Triple-A Omaha.

Advice: Klein was called up late in the week after Alec Marsh was put on the injured list in order to give the Royals another bullpen arm. With Marsh’s spot in the rotation now coming up, the Royals will send Klein back down in order to call up Jonathan Bowlan for the start. Klein made one appearance with the Royals, throwing a shutout inning while striking out two. He should be back up at some point this season. Rotoworld 17 minutes ago
  • Royals call-up starting pitcher Bowlan for Monday
Royals recalled RHP Jonathan Bowlan from Triple-A Omaha.

Advice: The move was reported yesterday but is official now. Bowlan has a 2.57 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 21 innings across four minor league starts this season. He leans heavily on a four-seam fastball which doesn’t get a lot of vertical movement and could be a pitch that struggles to translate to the MLB level. If he does stick in the rotation for a short stretch, he’ll have two starts this week; however, he might be best left on the wire for now. Will Klein was optioned to Omaha in a corresponding move. • Leaves yard in win
Nevin went 2-for-5 with a solo home run and two runs in a win over the Orioles on Sunday.

Advice: Nevin provided a key piece to the Athletics' late-game rally with his seventh-inning solo shot, inching Oakland to within a run at the time. It was Nevin's second time leaving the yard in his last four games, and he extended his hitting streak to six games in the process. The 26-year-old has served as one of the most reliable bats in a highly inconsistent A's offense, now sporting a .286/.342/.400 slash line through 76 plate appearances. Rotowire.com 20 minutes ago
  • Cooper activated to Red Sox roster
Red Sox activated 1B Garrett Cooper to their active roster.

Advice: Cooper was acquired from the Cubs for cash over the weekend and looks likely to make his Red Sox debut on Tuesday. The Red Sox were interested in signing Cooper as a free agent in the offseason and then after Triston Casas went down with an injury, their interest became even more intense. Cooper was having a solid start to the regular season in Chicago, slashing .270/.341/.432 with a homer and six RBI. There’s a good chance that he is the everyday first baseman in Boston until Casas returns in two or more months. Pablo Reyes was designated for assignment to make room for Cooper. • Pablo Reyes designated for assignment
Red Sox have designated INF Pablo Reyes for assignment.

Advice: The Red Sox needed to make a move to the active roster in order to make room for recently acquired Garrett Cooper. With Ceddanne Rafaela now a full-time infielder and Vaughn Grissom on his way back from the injured list, Reyes was less needed in Boston. The 30-year-old is hitting .183/.234/.217 in 64 plate appearances with five RBI and one steal. There is a chance that he latches on with somebody else as versatile infield depth. • Steals home Sunday
Vargas went 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored and a stolen base in Sunday's win over the Marlins.

Advice: With one out in the sixth inning, Vargas cracked a double off Bruch Smith, advanced to third on a single, then raced home as part of a double steal with Trey Lipscomb. Vargas got the start at second base Sunday with lefty Ryan Weathers on the mound for Miami, and a short-side platoon role at the keystone might be all that's available for the 32-year-old utility player right now with Lipscomb, Nick Senzel and Luis Garcia all producing at the plate. Vargas has been making an impact of his own when he gets the chance though, slashing .304/.396/.413 through 53 plate appearances with two steals, four RBI and five runs. Rotowire.com Today, 8:07 am

  • Three runs in comeback win
Lipscomb went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a stolen base in Sunday's win over the Marlins.

Advice: Getting the start at third base and batting sixth, Lipscomb played a big role as the Nationals made a stunning comeback from an early 7-0 deficit, eventually winning 12-9. The rookie has been getting consistent playing time since returning to the majors April 24, and he's responded with three straight multi-hit performances to boost his slash line on the season to .292/.356/.354 with one homer, five steals, four RBI and 13 runs in 73 plate appearances. Lipscomb has started all three of those games at third base, while Nick Senzel handles DH duties and Jesse Winker moves to left field. Expect the Nats to continue finding room for Lipscomb in the lineup as long as he's swinging a hot bat. Rotowire.com Today, 8:00 am
